This Saturday night, on March 21, 2009, we will set out to accomplish something great. We will be participating in a Pub Golf Tournament in the Virginia Highlands for Steve and Joe’s 30th Birthdays.

There is something happening when Americans who are young-ish in age and in spirit - who have never before participated in pub golf outings - turn out in numbers we’ve never seen because they know in their hearts that this time must be different.

There is something happening when people drink not just for Steve and Joe’s 30th Birthday, but the hopes they hold in common - that whether we are rich or poor; black or white; Latino or Asian; whether we hail from Reynoldstown or Roswell, Kirkwood or Dunwoody, we are ready to take drinking in a fundamentally new direction. That is what’s happening in the Virginia Highlands this Saturday. Change is what’s happening in Atlanta.

But the reason this pub gold outing is different is because it’s not just about Steve and Joe’s 30th birthday… it’s also about what you, the people who love to drink booze, can do to participate in it.

That’s why Saturday night belongs to you. It belongs to the organizers and the volunteers and the staff who believed in our improbable journey from bar-to-bar, and rallied so many others to join.

We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can withstand the power of dozens of voices calling out to the bartenders for another drink.

It was a creed written into the pub golf rules and regulations that declared the destiny of this birthday gathering.

It was whispered by pub golfers as they blazed a trail toward freedom through the darkest of Virginia Highland bars.

Yes we can.

It was sung by drunks as they struck out from distant subdivisions and debaucherous men and women who pushed southward toward North Highland Avenue against an unforgiving wilderness.

Yes we can.

Yes we can to beer and wine. Yes we can to Jack Daniels and Absolut Vodka. Yes we can damage our livers. Yes we can heal sobriety.

Yes we can.
